Dock fuel rarely costs the same at two marinas in a row. From Olympia in the south Sound up through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, posted prices swing by more than a dollar a gallon depending on how remote the marina sits, how it takes delivery, and what the local competition looks like. Boaters running out of Seattle, Kirkland, or Tacoma usually find the friendliest numbers at higher-volume mainland docks, while island and destination marinas carry a premium for the cost of getting fuel out to them. Glancing at the spread before you leave the slip is the easiest money you will save all season.
Not every fuel dock carries ethanol-free marine gasoline, often labeled E0 or rec fuel, and for gas-powered boats it is worth seeking out. Ethanol pulls moisture out of the air, and that water can separate out in the tank, corrode components, and break down older fuel lines and fiberglass tanks. If your boat runs gas, call ahead to confirm a marina stocks ethanol-free before you commit to the stop. Diesel tends to be more uniform dock to dock and is the standard for trawlers, larger cruisers, and most of the working fleet on the Sound.
The lowest posted price is not always the best deal once you count the run to reach it. A dock that is a dollar cheaper but an hour out of your way can cost more in burned fuel and lost daylight than it saves. The smarter play is topping off at a reasonably priced mainland marina on the way toward a high-cost destination like Roche Harbor, Deer Harbor, or Lake Union, rather than arriving on fumes and paying top dollar. Fuel dock hours swing hard with the season. Plenty of marinas trim their hours in fall and winter, and some close the fuel dock entirely outside peak months, especially in the San Juans and along Hood Canal where alternatives are few. Call ahead whenever a stop is critical to your route. Most docks take major cards, though a handful of remote locations stay cash-only or cap the transaction size. On longer runs, keeping the tank above half buys you options if your planned stop is closed, slammed on a summer weekend, or simply out of the fuel you need.
